Auction' Christie's New York Jewelry Spring Auction: Michele della Valle Color Rhapsody
Aug 20, 2022
From March 3 to March 17, Christie's New York is hosting a "Colorful Whimsy" online jewelry auction featuring 65 jewelry pieces created by Italian designer Michele della Valle. The highlight of his work is the colorful gemstone setting, full of fantasy colors and natural vitality.
Born in Rome, Michele della Valle began studying fashion jewelry design at the age of 16 and established her own jewelry studio in 1978. Michele is particularly fond of the magnificent hues of colored gemstones— before becoming an independent designer, he worked as a gem dealer and regularly traveled to Asia to source gemstones.
In this auction, you can see a wealth of "nature" themed jewelry, such as rabbits paved with blue topaz, cherries inlaid with red onyx, four-leaf clover with emerald and peridot, lemons surrounded by yellow sapphires, and birds with curved colored treasures. The highest estimate was a rose brooch, which cleverly used curved green tourmaline to express the visual depth of the petals, estimated at $15,000-25,000.
Michele della Valle designed a brooch for the auction, inspired by the New York city skyline, to present a three-dimensional three-story structure – the vista is lined with tall buildings, and the top floor is dotted with round diamonds; The close-up is the back of the Statue of Liberty, made of copper; The middle scene is the "Hudson River" that runs through New York City, paved with diamonds and sapphires, showing the flow of light and shadow.
