Brand profile

Piaget is a high-end Swiss watch and jewelry brand founded in Switzerland in 1874 by Georges Edouard Piaget. It is currently part of the Swiss Richemont Group. Piaget is one of the few watchmaking brands that has been able to independently design, develop and manufacture movements since its inception. Piaget specializes in ultra-thin watches, and more than half of all the movements designed and produced by Piaget are ultra-thin.
Brand history

1874 to 1942

In 1874, Georges Edouard Piaget settled in La Côte-aux-Fées in the Pygmy Mountains of Switzerland. He first set up his first movement workshop in his farmhouse, specializing in the production of high-quality movements with precise performance for the famous Swiss watch brand. The Count soon became famous, far beyond the Neuchatelle region of Switzerland. In 1911, Timothée Piaget took over the family business from his father.

1943~1956

Under the helm of the founders' grandsons Gérald Piaget and Valentin Piaget, Piaget was registered as a brand name in 1943 and he produced, launched and sold watches bearing the Piaget logo in the watch factory of La Côte-aux-Fées. Piaget is growing rapidly in the international market. In order to keep up with the growing business, a new factory was added in La Côte-aux-Fées in 1945. At the same time, Piaget began to invest in the research and development of ultra-thin movements.

1957~1963

In 1957, the Piaget watch factory in La Côte-aux-Fées introduced the 9P hand-wound ultra-thin mechanical movement (only 2 mm thick). In 1960, Piaget developed the 12P movement with a thickness of only 2.3 mm, the world's thinnest self-winding movement has been officially included in the Guinness Book of World Records. During this period, Piaget created a number of uniquely designed watches, such as ultra-thin watches, large dials, gold coin watches, rectangular models, etc. In 1957, the Emperador watch was introduced, becoming one of the brand's classic star watches. The ever-expanding Piaget opened a jewellery workshop in Geneva and opened its first Piaget store in 1959.

1964~1987

In 1964, Piaget launched its first series of watches using precious stones such as lapis lazuli, turquoise, black onyx, tiger's eye and so on. Then came the sleeve watch. In 1976 Piaget introduced the smallest 7P quartz movement of its time. The Piaget Polo Count Racecourse watch, introduced in 1979, is avant-garde in style and has become a symbolic watch for the Count. The launch of the Dancer series in 1986 also won the recognition of all parties.

1988~2000

The predecessor of the current Richemont Group, Vendôme Luxury Group, acquired Piaget Watch Factory in 1988. La Côte-aux-Fées has introduced the new series of movements 430P and 500P to replace the 9P and 12P movements. In 1999, Piaget launched the Piaget Emeraldr series with the most complex mechanical movements.

2001~2010

In 2001, Piaget established the Haute Horlogerie at Plan-les-Ouates, the gateway to Geneva. Over the past decade, Piaget has introduced nearly 30 new movements, including many complex movements, notably a tourbillon movement, a dual-time zone return chronograph movement and a perpetual calendar movement. In 2010, Piaget successfully set two records to create the world's thinnest self-winding movement and self-winding watch, and two years later launched a skeletonized version of the same movement.

Ultra-thin movement

Piaget's 9P and 12P movements, introduced in 1957 and 1960, were the world's thinnest manually wound and self-winding movements respectively. These two movements later spawned a series of modern versions of the movement, the 430P, 450P and 438P movements with a thickness of only 2.1 mm. These movements are used in models such as the Altiplano series.

Tourbillon movement

The tourbillon movement took more than 3 years to develop, and the result is the world's thinnest Piaget 600P rectangular tourbillon movement, with a thickness of only 3.5 mm. The tourbillon movement frame is particularly complex: it consists of 42 tiny components, including three titanium bridges weighing only 0.2 grams. The floating tourbillon is fixed to a single-point axis and has the Surface engraved with the Piaget's P-letter logo, which makes it more difficult to balance the system. In order to ensure the accuracy and reliability of the watch, each 600P movement is assembled from start to finish by only one watchmaking technician.

Skeleton tourbillon movement

The floating tourbillon movement is Piaget's masterpiece, it is the world's thinnest rectangular tourbillon movement (only 3.5 mm thick). A hand-engraved sunlight carving radiates outward from the tourbillon frame, creating 60 lines, symbolizing 60 seconds of time. The gold movement is set with famous precious stones. Piaget's skeleton tourbillon movement holds several patents, each of which is assembled by the same watchmaking technician.

Flyback movement

Designed, developed and manufactured by Piaget In-House, the 560P hand-wound mechanical movement is equipped with a sophisticated flyback seconds display. The flyback second hand runs from 0 to 30 in the curved display set at 12 o'clock, and returns to the starting point in an instant to start again. The 24-month R&D design combines a number of exquisite hand-decorated ones: ring Geneva corrugation, pearl polka dot polishing of the machine plate, chamfering and extension of the bridge, blue screws.

Self-winding movement

In 2006, Piaget introduced a new generation of self-winding mechanical movements. Calibre 800P is equipped with a minute display, a central second hand, a large date display, two barrels and a power reserve of up to 72 hours. The 12-legal -- (26.8 mm) diameter calibre 800P has a frequency of 21,600 vibrations per hour (3 Hz) and relies on a screw balance wheel for fine adjustment. The two dials of the 850P dual-time zone calibre display the small seconds and the second time zone time, respectively. And equipped with a day and night indicator device synchronized with the first time zone, so that the display function is more complete.
