Brand profile
Gucci is an Italian luxury brand founded by Guccio Gucci in 1921 in Florence, Italy. The brand's product line includes fashion, leather goods, watches, jewelry and perfumes. Gucci is currently part of the French Kering Group.
Brand history
The founder of the Gucci brand, Guccio Gucci, worked in fine hotels in Paris and London in his early years, and the luxurious suitcases of various upper-class aristocrats impressed the young Guccio. In 1921, Guccio opened a leather goods workshop and a small luggage store in his hometown of Florence, Italy, and hired Tuscan leather craftsmen to manufacture leather goods.
Many of Guccio's Italian customers at the time were local horseback aristocrats, and to cater to their need for horseback gear, Gucci designed a unique horsebit pattern – a classic symbol of the brand.
During World War II, due to the lack of raw materials, Gucci began experimenting with materials other than leather, such as hemp fiber, flax and jute. Gucci's classic bamboo bag was introduced during this period, using polished bamboo as the handle of the bag.
In the 1950s, Gucci took inspiration from traditional saddle straps to create a classic logo with "green, red and green" stripes. With the opening of boutiques in Milan and New York, Gucci began to establish itself as an international fashion luxury brand.
Guccio Gucci died in 1953 and his four sons, Aldo, Vasco, Ugo and Rodolfo, officially took over gucci. In the mid-'60s, Gucci introduced the dual G interbuckling logo. In the 1970s, Gucci expanded into Asia, opening new stores in Hong Kong and Tokyo.
In 1982, Gucci became a public company and was taken over by Maurizio Gucci, son of 50 percent Rodolfo. In 1987, Investcorp, an investment firm in Bahrain, began acquiring Gucci, eventually acquiring all of Gucci's shares in the early 1990s.
Since 1994, some classic brands such as French Saint Laurent have been acquired by the Gucci Group. In 1997, Gucci bought the Swiss watch factory Severin Montres, with which he had worked for many years. PR.
